For UI designers and website developers, there are a huge number of nice icon collections, but most of these collections are designed for a specific purpose, theme or industry. Most of the time, designers have to mix and match desired icons and customize them according to the requirements resulting in a lot of effort, un-balanced designs, and sometimes mere frustration. As a designer, I often feel the need of a set of generic icons that I can use easily in any design theme without having to customize their design, combination or color.gcons is my contribution to the world of open source resources for designers and web developers. These icons are multi-purpose and can be a good fit in a number of scenarios like UI themes, technical diagrams, website design, prototype development etc.Thank you very much, Sarfraz! We appreciate your efforts.[By the way, did you know we have a brand new free Smashing Email Newsletter? FIFA Football World Cup 2010 Wallpapers (for Minimalism Lovers)
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/SmashingMagazine/~3/2Wsa9ZFQmg4/
The 2010 Football World Cup is coming up in a couple of days and we decided to celebrate this event with an exclusive set of very simple Footbal World Cup wallpapers for minimalism lovers, created by Oliver Twardowski especially for Smashing Magazine and its readers. The World Cup will be held in South Africa, between 11 June and 11 July 2010, and will involve 32 teams competing for the title. The wallpapers are grouped in countries and presented in the alphabetical order. The design is very minimal: the only changing detail of the design is the horizontal line presented on the bottom of the wallpaper. The idea was to keep the design very subtle and simple, making it possible for you to actually use the wallpaper within your work environment. So you should be able to place all desktop icons on the wallpapers without moving things around.Algeria1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Argentina1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Australia1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Brazil1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Cameroon1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Chile1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Denmark1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.England1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.France1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Germany1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Ghana1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Greece1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Honduras1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Italy1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Ivory Coast1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Japan1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Mexico1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Netherlands1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.New Zealand1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Nigeria1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.North Korea1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Paraguay1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Portugal1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Serbia1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Slovakia1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Slovenia1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.South Africa1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.South Korea1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Spain1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Switzerland1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.Uruguay1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.USA1680×1050, 1600×1200, 2560×1440.[Offtopic: By the way, did you know that Smashing Magazine has a mobile version? CSS 2.1 and CSS 3 Help Cheat Sheets (PDF)
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/SmashingMagazine/~3/HIAFZMNaN5Q/
Today we are glad to release two useful cheat sheets that will help you quickly look up the right CSS 2.1-property or an obscure CSS 3 property. The style sheets contain most important properties, explanations and keywords for each property. The help sheets were created by GoSquared and released for Smashing Magazine and its readers.Download the cheat sheets for free! The CSS 2.1 Help Sheet covers Syntax, Font, Text, Margins, Padding, Border, Position, Background, List, Media Types and Keywords. The CSS 3 Help Sheet contains code snippets for Rounded Corners, Box Shadow, Multiple Columns, Text Shadow, RGBa, Font Face (actually, not the CSS3 property, but still include for the sake of usefulness), Box Sizing, Box Resize, Outline and Gradients.CSS 2.1 Sheet (large preview)CSS 3 Sheet (large preview)download the CSS 2.1 Sheet (PDF) (0.2 Mb)download the CSS 3 Sheet (PDF) (0.2 Mb)release post on the designers’ pageBehind the designAs always, here are some insights from the designers:“We created the original CSS Help Sheet because we spent ages staring at ugly cheat sheets while designing beautiful sites. So we thought we’d make a Help Sheet that didn’t hurt the eyes of anyone who tried to use it. The past year, we’ve found ourselves using more and more CSS3 methods, and there was never much in the way of help out there until we decided to create a Help Sheet specifically for CSS3.We’ve kept CSS2 and CSS3 on separate Help Sheets for now as not everything in CSS3 is finalised, or works in all browsers (cough, IE).We hope you enjoy using them, and that they help you create even more memorable, usable, and stylish websites.Thank you, guys. We really appreciate your work and your good intentions.[By the way, did you know we have a brand new free Smashing Email Newsletter? VI Editor / Linux Terminal Cheat Sheet (PDF)
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/SmashingMagazine/~3/aTbrqb0b_K0/
We’ve been releasing many icon sets and WordPress themes on Smashing Magazine, yet today we are glad to announce the release of a bit different freebie. This post features a VI Help Sheet, a cheat sheet for the VI Editor, for all web-developers out there who are working on Linux. The help sheet was designed by GoSquared and released for Smashing Magazine and its readers. The cheat sheet contains terminal commands for modes and controls, inserting text, cursor navigation, deleting text, searching and replacing. Download it. Print it. Stick it on the wall and get commanding.Download the cheat sheet for free!large previewdownload the PDF-file (0.5 Mb)release post on the designers’ pageBehind the designAs always, here are some insights from the designers:We created the VI Editor cheat sheet because of the amount of time members of our team spend working in the Linux Terminal. Working on our web app is a full time occupation and for the developers, using the command line 24/7 can be exhausting. Forgetting a command here or there can really break up their workflow. So we put together the VI cheat sheet that can be used for quick reference as and when you need!Thank you, guys. http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/SmashingMagazine/~3/cJNMSIrIDK8/
There are thousands of free icon sets out there, and every other day we see new sets being released by the design community. In fact, Smashing Magazine has been releasing icon sets for years now, too. But today’s release is particularly important. Over the last 1.5 years, Oliver Twardowski was designing and preparing an “ultimate web designer’s icon set” exclusively for Smashing Magazine and its readers. Today we release the third, final version of the set, an extensive pack with over 750 free icons (48×48px) for designers and Web developers. The .PSD-sources are available for free download as well. The set consists of web application icons, user interface icons, e-commerce icons, general use icons, desktop icons, blog icons, smiley icons, button icons, keyboard icons, national flags icons, popular online services icons and many others.Download the icon set for free! You can use the set for all of your projects for free and without any restrictions. A couple of months later, in May 2009, I extended that set and released ‘Flavour Extended’. Now, over one year later it’s time to finish this set. ‘Addictive Flavour’ will be the last part of the Flavour series. (At least for now I think it will be ^_^ ).In my releases I asked you for your feedback on the iconset and that feedback was overwhelming. I received hundreds of e-mails and read even more comments here and on Twitter. With ‘Addictive Flavour’ I hope to give you the icon set that you wanted and that you need for your web development projects. Though, if there is a special icon missing in the set that you need for your project or site, please feel free to contact me on Twitter (@mywayhome or via e-mail (icons [at] addictedotocoffee dot de) and we’ll see what we can do for you!I want to thank all of you for your great support with this huge icon set. Especially I want to thank Magda, Lars, Martin LeBlanc, Bastian Allgeier, the team at Smashing Magazine and all of the beta-viewers who did a fantastic job on reviewing my work and giving me feedback, love and inspiration! Please stay tuned for more of my releases here in Smashing Magazine or via my Twitter stream. Thanks a lot, Oliver.Thank you very much, Oliver!
