Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months. And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application? This post features 70 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free. Please notice:all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Fantastic Wallpapers That Will Blow Your Desktop Away
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/SmashingMagazine/~3/wGDhLjatpQg/
We love desktop wallpapers. And we love beautiful ones most. And although we monthly publish desktop wallpapers of our readers (desktop wallpaper calendar feature), we thought that it would be nice to provide our contributors with some fresh inspiration and our readers with some nice wallpaper update for a lousy Monday. The wallpapers for this post were selected over a long period of time; they cover mainly nature, abstract and digital art (further collections will be coming if you are interested). We’ve tried to pick only the most beautiful ones and hopefully you won’t be disappointed. Below we present a showcase of over 50 fantastic wallpapers that will blow your desktop away. Most of them are in HD and will make your desktop look as nifty as it is possible. Because the resolutions are so high, if one doesn’t fit your screen, use your favorite image editor to refine its dimensions. You may also be interested in the following related posts:

Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: March 2009
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/02/27/desktop-wallpaper-calendar-march-2009/
This post features 45 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free. Please notice:
all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper; you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for March 2009? Paragliding "Some people are made for the sky, some people are made for the Earth! Clear Sky, travelling and flying that’s what we are living for." Designed by Michael Gabris from Zvolen, Slovakia.

This is the 3rd month of 09, a year of many wars; civil wars, financial wars & the never ending human wars. Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: February 2009
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/01/30/desktop-wallpaper-calendar-february-2009/
The wallpapers calendar series will not be discontinued. Next month is the last month in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. In February, you’ll have one last chance to showcase your work by designing a desktop wallpaper calendar for Smashing Magazine. But don’t worry, we have a number of new contests coming up, so it will be worth staying in touch! Wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use one wallpaper for a long time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration from it. That’s why we decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers to cover 12 months. And to make them a little more distinctive than the usual fare, we decided to embed calendars for each month. If you need to look up a date, isn’t it better to show off nice wallpaper with a nice calendar, instead of launching your default time application? This post features 70 (!) free desktop wallpapers for February 2009, created by designers across the globe. Every wallpaper can be downloaded for free and comes in two versions: one with a calendar and one without. Please note:
All images are linked to a preview of the wallpaper. You can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to feature on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
This month, we’ve been literally smashed by the explosion of your desktop wallpaper calendars. So look out, February 2009, we’re coming! Moon Dreams “Here is my moon schedule calendar for February 2009. A moon phase for every day, because since ancient times people have always known about the moon cycle and how it affects human behavior. When the moon is full or new, people can be extremely sensitive and show some big changes in their mood and behavior. That is why I wanted to create something fun and useful at the same time. I called it “Moon Dreams.’” Designed by Yana Foltice.

The landscape was just magnificent, with the sparkling snow in the mid-day sun. Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: February 2009
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/01/30/desktop-wallpaper-calendar-february-2009/

Winter Sun “On one of my trips back home to southern Germany I was out in the countryside on a beautiful sunny late winter day. The landscape was just magnificent, with the sparkling snow in the mid-day sun. I took the picture with my digital camera when the horse appeared because it really shows how small we are in proportion to these majestic mountains. From the picture, I created the artwork for the desktop. Hope you all enjoy! ” Designed by Brigitte DiBenedetto of USA and Germany.

Celebrations of the New Year is always full of fireworks, so I used fireworks in my wallpaper. Global Village "The January sheet of the wallpaper is based on the theme ‘Global Village.’ The main illustration is done by Shlomit Wolf. It shows a peaceful coexistance of flora, fauna and technology on this planet Earth. Technology has made all of us closer. The tagline ’start something good’ reminds us about new year resolutions and the importance of being a good, wiser person. All of us use computers for personal and professional work. My desktop is always messy and I never tamper with the position of taskbar. All the icons or files tend to be on the left side of the screen. So, the calendar wallpaper should not have any numerals on that ?forbidden? area. Also, there should be ample space at the bottom to accommodate the taskbar. A graphic can cover the rest of the space with a nice tagline. The sheet has both the current month?s calendar and the coming month’s calendar. The font used is Century Gothic. For easy ?deciphering,? Saturdays and Sundays are given in a contrasting colour than the weekdays. The coming month?s calendar is justified by the fact that people always plan things in advance. These plans can spill over to a date in the next month. So, no need for turning pages in and out while planning a project or a holiday break." Designed by Anas K A from Bangalore, India.

Winter Night "It’s winter time and I have designed my first submission for the month January. I thought this wallpaper works perfectly because it’s the darkest time of the year but it’s still one of the most contemplative. Well that was my inspiration for this silence, illustrative artwork. I hope it will be on the next Desktop Wallpaper submission." Designed by Christian Rumpf from Austria.

Freddygirl "I thought it would be fun to play with the grays of January. The month is pretty blah, at least in my part of the world. Luckily, a day of sunshine always seems to come along just when your spirits need lifting. Best wishes to all for a joyful 2009." Designed by Michelle Cormack.

Classic Car "This design came about through some experimental photography with a holga camera. I used black and white 120 film and photoshopped in some additional vintage effects. I thought it was an appropriate theme because with holga cameras, you never know what your pictures may turn out like - double exposures, light leaks etc. Likewise, here in St. Louis, Missouri you never know what the weather might have in store from one day to the next during winter months." Designed by Michelle Milla from USA.

Birth of Stars "Since it’s the beginning of a new year, and the launch of our new website, we hope that one day we could be counted among the stars born this month, hence the theme “Birth of Stars”." Designed by webmastrish.com team from USA.

Reading on the bus "I like the way people spend time while commuting, specially when somebody is too concentrated to realize that he/she is my model. Although sometimes it’s not easy, because the bus/subway is packed, I love drawing on wheels." Designed by Patricia Montero de Cabana.
